Automatic Gates — What to Know
Going automatic is the biggest decision in a driveway gate project. Swing gates need clear swing space but are simpler and cheaper; slide gates work where space is tight. Openers come in solar and hardwired options; access via keypad, remote, or phone. Every automatic gate needs safety sensors and a clear swing/slide path, plus power to the gate location. We’ll walk you through the options and costs at your consultation — and tell you honestly whether automation is worth it for your setup.
Built to Swing Right in Texas
Sagging gates are a DFW epidemic, and the cause is almost always the same: posts that weren’t set deep enough for our shifting clay soil. We set posts deep with proper footings, use rust-resistant hinges and hardware rated for the weight, and hang every gate square and true. Wood gates get UV-protective stain; iron gets powder-coat. The result: a gate that swings right this year and next.

Gate FAQs
How much does a gate cost in Dallas–Fort Worth?
It depends on size, material, and whether it’s manual or automatic. A pedestrian garden gate is the most affordable; a double-swing cedar driveway gate costs more; the automatic opener is the biggest single cost. We measure in person and give you one clear price.
Should I choose a manual or automatic driveway gate?
If you drive through it daily, automatic is worth it — the convenience pays for itself and adds security and value. A manual gate is fine for side and garden gates used on foot. We’ll walk you through the opener options and costs at your consultation.
Wood or iron for a driveway gate?
Cedar is warm and matches a wood fence, but needs re-staining every 2–3 years. Iron and aluminum are nearly maintenance-free, formal, and secure. Many homeowners pair a wood fence with an iron gate accent — best of both.
Why is my gate sagging? Can it be fixed?
It’s almost always a post or hinge problem — in DFW, posts that weren’t set deep enough for our shifting clay soil. It’s often fixable: we reset the posts, upgrade the hinges, and re-hang the gate square. If the gate itself is rotted or twisted, rebuilding is usually the better money.
Do I need a permit for a driveway gate?
Most cities don’t require a permit for the gate itself, but automatic gates with electrical work may need an electrical permit. HOAs almost always require architectural approval. We handle the paperwork and build to code.
How long does it take?
A standard gate is typically a day once built. Custom fabrication takes longer upfront; openers add setup and testing time. We give you a firm schedule before we start.
Can you match my gate to my existing fence?
Yes — matching the same wood, stain, and style is standard for us. If we’re building the fence too, the gate and fence are designed together from the start.
What maintenance does a gate need?
Wood gates need re-staining every 2–3 years and an occasional hinge lube. Iron and aluminum just need a rinse and hinge lube. Openers need a clear path and working sensors. We show you the routine at the walkthrough.
Do you repair gates, or only build new ones?
Both. We do hinge and latch replacement, sagging gate re-hangs, and opener troubleshooting. If a gate is structurally shot, we’ll give you an honest rebuild-vs-repair call.
